Window films are designed to screen out the sun’s radiation to help reduce the major causes of fading, but nothing completely stops fading if you want some light in the home.

Solar radiation is made up of three primary components. There is visible light we can see, infrared we feel as heat and ultraviolet (UV) rays which are invisible. The major component causing fading of fabrics and furnishings is ultraviolet light. 3M Window Films produce information which says that UV is approximately 40% of the cause, visible light is about 25% and heat about 25%. The remaining 10% can be attributed to humidity, pollutants and interior lighting.

UV light is also implicated in the development of skin cancers and skin damage causing premature aging of the skin. Films that block UV installed on glass panes can also assist in reducing skin exposure through the glass.

Window films such as 3M’s Prestige and Ceramic ranges of films can reduce Ultra Violet light by up to 99.9% – basically all that can be observed with today’s scientific instruments without looking very obvious on the glass, or making rooms dark.
